Not sure if there is a relationship between the Vanston and Vanstone surnames but all is possible. I am looking for a connection with the Vanston family from County Leix in Ireland to other Vanstons or Vanstones. I am aware of other Vanstons in County Cork but can't find a connection as yet, Can anyone help?
From the beginnings I have in County Leix I have traced direct family lines to England, Canada & New Zealand, all starting from John Vanston b.1771 (not sure where) but he lived in Maryborough, Queen's County, which is now Portlaoise, County Leix.
I have also found during my research other Vanston families and I feel that there must be a common ancestry somewhere.
Any help would be much appreciated. | |

I believe our ancestry split right after John Vanston, with me being decended from Thomas Maurice Vanston, and he from Thomas's brother James Maurice. (Based on some information from another discussion). Thomas Vanston married twice, both women from Ireland, including Agnes Brennen who was also from maryborough, and appears to have settled in Mallorytown, Leeds Ontario with him, but passed away after a few babes, and then later Alice Clark, who was also originally from ireland, but unknown where.
Like Richard, I am trying to identify the family or father of John Vanston.
Only info i've been able to obtain regarding John is that he was born in 1771 in Ireland, and appears to have died in 1857 in Nutgrove, Maryborough. He married a Rose Maurice, and had several children, including James and Thomas.
At this point, I've been unable to link John or the other Nutgrove Maryborough Vanstons to the Vanstones, or to any of the Devon families. I would appreicate any information that helps me trace my Vanstons back further | |

Burial of John Vanston, of New Row (no other details recorded)

Burial of George Vanston, of Ye Coombe
February 1709, St Nicholas Without
Jon Vanston, of Brids Alley
26th June 1709, St Nicholas Without
Burial of Jon Vanston, of Patk (Patrick?) Street
In the 1720's and 1730's there are baptisms and burials for Vanstan, at St John, Dublin.
This Irish link is very intriguing!!

Your post is very interesting and shows that there were other Vanston families in Ireland. my problem as with Matt is to find an earlier family for John Vanston born 1771. I know he lived in Maryborough, Queen's County and there were other Vanstons in the locality at Redcastle these could possibly be siblings of his but at present I cannot find any link. There were also Vanstons in County Cork but again no proven link with my John Vanston.
What I would really like to find and prove is his parents and their other children as it seems unlikely that at that time he would have been an only child, families were usually larger than that.
I remember being told that a great aunt had traced the name back to Holland when the Vanston's (or Van Ston's, Van Stone's) served in the army of William of Orange and landed in the West Country before settling in Ireland, this is another track which is proving awkward to verify.

If you read what is on this website you will see that there is no proven link to Holland! 
Maybe we could see the research your Great Aunt did, in proving this theory?
