Winifred Vanstone (5th Jul 10 at 3:43pm UTC)
Hi, I was wondering if anyone had come across a Winifred Vanstone born 1884 in the Crediton district? She's my great-grandmother. I can't find her on the 1891, 1901 and 1911 Census returns, even though she didn't marry until 1912. However she is in the GRO records as being born in 1884.

I've come across a Winifred, birth registered in 1884 in Okehampton district. Did she marry William Moore? It is very odd that she's not in the census, but her birth certificate would at least give her parents names and you might then be able to find them in the census. It's possible she was listed by a family nickname. Not Winnie. I tried that one. Or the census entries have been misread by the transcriber.

There is a Winifred Vanstone in the 1901 census.
!7 year old servant - but birth place described as Whitchurch.
However, looking at the original census returns, the birth place is just written as "Do" (or ditto). I don't suppose that servants were always asked by the master of the house for exact details?

Can't find her in 1911 though. Probably a horrible transcription?!

Hi I have only just joined the forum and was fascinated to find enquiry's about Winifred, she was my Great Grandmother also, I remember her well being 16 when she died, she stayed with us and we took her back to Bow to visit her brother in law Sidney Moore, it is only now that I realise I do not know anything of her family, the Vanstones, she married William Henry Moore in 1912 and her son Ernest was born in 1915, he was my Grandad.
If anyone has found out anything that would be amazing. My Dad always said she said she came from Branscombe, I can find no evidence of this, it does look more likely to be the Okehampton area as the birth certificate for a Winifred Vanstone born 1884 suggests. Looking forward to hearing from anyone.

Finally got around to ordering Winifred Vanstone's birth certificate and it arrived today! She was born in Okehampton Workhouse to Ellen Vanstone who was unmarried. Having a quick look at the census returns I can access for free - Ellen was the daughter of John and Susanna Vanstone. John was born about 1811 in Hatherleigh and his wife c1813 in Inwardleigh. Wondered if this links in with anyone else's Vanstone Family Tree?? Interestingly the information I had from the family bible was that Winifred was born in Waytown Devon - so either she didn't know she was born in the workhouse or she tried to hide the fact. Her grandparents and mother lived in Waytown Inwardleigh in the 1861 Census which is probably where that came from. Also, in the 1881 Census, 3 years before Winifred was born her mother Ellen lived at the Okehampton Workhouse and there were 2 Vanstone children there also, Henry aged 2 and John aged 5.

Hi Dudley,

Winifred was my grandmother. she was married to William Henry Moore and they lived in a railway cottage at Seaton Junction, where we used to go and say with them until he was killed on the railway and she moved to Axminster. Ernest (Ernie) Moore was my uncle (my mother was his sister Winifred) and he was married to Doll (presume that's short for something), I used to stay with them in the school holidays in the 1950's, I used to love that as they were a fabulous couple, I never saw them when they weren't laughing, They had 2 sons and 2 daughters one of whom I presume must be your father/mother, I think the eldest son was called Will (can't be sure) the daughters were Judith and Sarah (?) and I think the youngest boy might have been Paul. Winifred was born in Okehampton workhouse, no record of father on her birth cert.
